The Day One Youth Ambassador program was made possible through Kaiser and Champions for Change funding to create healthy communities and implement School Wellness Councils at high schools in PUSD. Eight students from PUSD were selected in February through an application and interview process: Charisma Marines and Frida Ramires from Marshall Fundamental, Destinee Harding and Victoria Pulcifer from John Muir, Tiffany Jennings and Kelly Acevedo from Blair, and Socorro Anguiano and Diana Menjivar from Pasadena High.
The goal of the Health Ambassador program is to empower at-risk youth to be a force for change in their families, social circles, schools, and communities. Health Ambassadors are tasked with outreach, recruitment, and maintaining active community participation in the School Wellness Councils.
As a way to promote health and wellness in PUSD, students developed a social media campaign around the newly formed Wellness Councils called #DOwell. This initiative is building a network among each school and the community to promote the efforts of the Wellness Councils.
Most recently, Marshall Fundamental held their first Wellness Council meeting on March 22nd and on March 29th at John Muir. Both meetings were productive and had significant participation! Additional meetings at Blair and Pasadena High are being scheduled before the end of Spring semester.
You can stay tuned into the efforts of each PUSD Wellness Council by following @day1do and the social media hashtag #DOWell, #DOWellMarshall, #DOWellMuir, #DOWellBlair, #DOWellPHS on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
