On April 1st, the El Monte Union High School Board approved of a district-wide School Wellness Policy upon first reading. The policy can be read here. Collaborating with the District, Day One emphasized the inclusion of walk/bike to school programs and the creation of student-led advisory councils at every high school. Similar to ASB members, students in each advisory council will be advocates for healthy eating and active living at their respective campuses. There will be a second reading of the policy at the May 6th, 2015 Board meeting.
Another highlight is our POWER (Providing Opportunities for Wellness Education and Recreation) program, a free weekly physical activity program held at Mountain View High School that kicked off on February 24th. Happening every Tuesday from 3-4pm, trainers from Wolfpack Fitness, a local gym, lead classes such as Zumba and cross training. POWER will continue until the end of the school year and is open to all in the El Monte community, including students, teachers, staff and residents. Join us every Tuesday afternoon at Mountain View High School!
Equally exciting, El Monte’s first bike lane will officially open this Saturday, April 25th! A part of the City of El Monte’s Earth Day Celebration, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at Arceo Park at 10am. A 1.3 mile community ride on the new Tyler Ave. bike lane will follow shortly after. This bike lane opening is a momentous occasion since Day One Youth Advocates, BikeSGV and supporters from the community advocated for safer streets and bicycle infrastructure last November. The City of El Monte approved of Complete Streets policy and the Regional Bike Master Plan and now, they are turning the community’s VISION into a REALITY. You can RSVP for the grand opening ride via Facebook here.
Coincidentally, BikeSGV and CICLE are hosting a bike ride in El Monte this Sunday, April 26th called “El Monte Bicycultura: Art, Bikes and History”. The educational ride will start and end at the El Monte Bus Station, celebrating El Monte’s cultural heritage. The 8-mile route will feature the Valley Mall, Rio Hondo River, and Mulhall Family Center. RSVP to the Facebook event here.
Together, we can turn our VISION of a healthy El Monte into a REALITY.
