After founding Day One in 1988, Fran served as agency head for almost a decade. The organization flourished under her tenure, quickly becoming a leader in building coalitions of non-traditional partners to address substance abuse problems on a local, regional and statewide level.
"Fran was a force of nature- she was my friend, mentor, and confidante. The lady in red will be someone I will admire and try to live up to for the rest of my life. She has planted many trees which we are all lucky to take shade under,” said current Day One Executive Director, Christy Zamani. “All Pasadenans owe a debt of gratitude to Fran, whose lifelong advocacy and projects will continue to bear fruit for the community in the years to come."
“On behalf of Day One's staff, Youth Advocates and many volunteers, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the Neumann family and Fran's many friends and supporters in the community. We at Day One will forever be grateful for the foundation Fran built for supporting public health in the community and greater San Gabriel Valley.”
Fran left an equally strong mark on former Day One Executive Director Michael Browning, who assumed the reigns of the organization from her in the late 1990s. “I have never met a person like Fran. Everything that she has done for the community was done because she felt it was the right thing to do. Her decisions were pure. Her intentions were to do what it took to make our community healthier. I only wish that I could live up to her standards. Her love for us all will live on through the seeds that she has planted in us all. I love you, Fran.”
